The top half of the chart no longer utilized airplay, that it had used before this week. There was a featured headline in Billboard magazine which highlighted the major change to the Hot 100 Singles chart. On the week of May 11th of 1968, the top half of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart was tabulated solely on sales. It was a change that gave better attention to sales. However, Billboard magazine made a huge revision to its setup for the chart. By 1968, the Billboard Hot 100 still kept its methodology of reports to tabulate its weekly focus. The sales ratio was much larger during the ’60s. After all, it is a “singles” chart and the sales are the real focus. Plus, Billboard magazine was printed in a user friendly way that appealed to consumers.Īs I have said, the Hot 100 chart was put together by reports of sales and airplay. One very popular radio show, American Top 40, used the Billboard Hot 100 for many years for its weekly countdown. Even though it is a trade magazine, Billboard is also very popular with consumers since it was referenced and also used for countdowns on various radio shows. The music industry was certainly aware of their market, particularly the young adult to teen and even pre-teen demographic. Popular music during this time period was indeed a heavy singles market. Sales of singles were through the roof during the 60s. Airplay was secondary and used to promote the single. In the earlier years of the chart though, the focus was centered primarily around sales. The process for airplay and sales reports included calling record stores and radio stations to obtain ranked lists of their best selling or most played singles. The airplay was compiled from national Top 40 playlists. The sales were compiled from a national sample of retail store reports. From the beginning, the Hot 100 chart tabulated its data from sales and airplay. The Hot 100 chart was first published in the late ’50s. Its weekly chart reported the biggest singles in the country.
